Nature Outings before Treks & Texts
Hello blog! I figured it would be fun for my first post to be about the way I view/enjoy nature prior to this course. My current stance is that I already spend a good amount of time outside, but I am hoping to find more activities that I can do outside. I walk everyday because it helps me decompress and take breaks, but I will usually be on the phone or listening to a podcast, so I am going to try to have more mindful walks. I like to walk with people a lot as well! That is what inspired the name of my blog, Where Sasha Walks - especially because I will likely be walking more than I already do and noting what I see around TCU/Fort Worth on these walks.
Some other things I have done outdoors that I truly love includes reading and eating outside, going on bike rides, swimming, tanning, and doing other activities in the water, and horseback riding. I grew up in Arkansas and Oregon before moving to Dallas, and both states were beautiful in unique ways. In Arkansas, my family went on a lot of hikes and bike rides, as well as the occasional water rafting trip or floating the river. We also had a lot of snow days growing up, and I have a lot of nice memories playing outside and sledding with my neighbors in my cul-de-sac. I spent ages nine through thirteen in Oregon, where I got to experience the Pacific Ocean, skiing at Mt. Hood, tubing on the river, paddleboarding, hiking places like Punch Bowl Falls, and more. One of my favorite memories with my family was when we went to Canada and got to see the suspension bridge in Vancouver. We have also done a lot of bungee jumping and ziplining, because although now I have a small fear of heights, when I was younger I liked being high up and getting to see everything from another perspective. I have also done many roadtrips with my family (my dad has an RV) and have seen over half of the country doing that!
Furthermore into college, I have had the opportunity to take trips with friends and visit them in their hometowns, which has allowed me to see a lot of new scenery. Some notable trips for me have been Santa Barbara and Cabo!
I am looking forward to learning more about nature in this course and see how I can use what we are learning to become more aware of all of the things I can see and do outdoors!
Thanks Sasha. Loved the photos, especially the sunrise or sunset (of course). You offer insight into how we generally experience the outdoors, being both there and not there. It's hard to isolate and give up phones and connections--harder still to be really mindful. I think that's what Abbey talks about in his first chapter, the true decompressing in nature. I look forward to our semester together.
